IT OFTEN BEGINS WITH AN "UM... SUSI... DO YOU TALK ABOUT PAINFUL SEX?"
The answer is . . . . "yes".
So many people believe that pain with sex is an expected reality for those going through menopause.
And it makes sense that this belief exists.
Many people ask their doctors for solutions and are told to relax, have a glass of wine, to chill out.
Not. Super. Helpful.
I am here to say that pain with sex doesn't have to be your reality.
THE BIOLOGICAL REALITY OF MENOPAUSE IS REAL. AND, IT CAN BE EXPERIENCED DIFFERENTLY.
Yes, hormones are changing.
Tissue is thinner.
Vaginas are drier.
Orgasms may be less or non-existent.
Emotions may be rolling and surprisingly random.
Sleep may be less rejuvenating.
Hot flashes may be hellish.
But you are not doomed.
* We are starting off the day talking about it all -- orgasms, sex drive, libido, hormones, and the two most common reasons why women in menopause stop having sex. Get ready for an engaging, educational and entertaining session. Dr. Kelly is so approachable it is like talking with your big sister who is a doctor, making people comfortable with these often uncomfortable topics, and changing lives in the bedroom and out with her practical useful tips.
The science of Ayurveda deliberately focuses on natural rhythms: rhythms of day and night, of the seasons, and of the stages of life. In this session, we will talk about the 'seasons of life', specifically the transition between the summer of life and the autumn of life, known as menopause. This transition, like all transitions, can flow smoothly or have its challenges. We'll look at the Ayurvedic perspective on menopause, some of the typical challenges, and talk about how Ayurveda works with this natural transition to support health, balance, and well-being.
Maybe you and your partner have a loving relationship but sex has dropped off, perhaps your libido is dead, maybe you want to devote some time to sexual pleasure but aren't really sure how, maybe you are concerned about having the sometimes difficult conversations about sex with your partner, particularly because there is pain, or it just doesn't feel the same now that you are in menopause. Dr. Sonia has a natural ability to put people at ease while discussing sensitive issues related to sex. She will inspire you to view sexuality and sexual intimacy as a normal part of life. And how you can address sexual difficulties without shame and guilt.
Contrary to popular belief, Hot Flashes are not something you need to "tough out". Nor should you. Even if you are willing to spend years dressing in layers and being exhausted, what is now appreciated is that the impact of hot flashes goes far beyond the misery of feeling like you are in a sauna. There is scientific evidence that hot flashes increase the risk of developing heart disease and other serious medical conditions. For this two-part 75-minute talk, Dr. Lauren will teach 25 minutes on hot flashes (what are they, how long they last, the reason to treat) with 10 minutes of Q&A to follow; then teach for 25 minutes on treatment options (hormonal and non hormonal)) with another 15 minutes of Q&A.
Kegels are not the answer for everything - and may actually cause more issues with pain during intercourse and with incontinence! Tension in the pelvic floor can contribute to pain with intercourse, lower back pain, pelvic pain and bladder and bowel issues. During this presentation we will discuss strategies to decrease tension in your pelvic floor muscles, for painful intercourse and whether or not you would benefit from seeing a pelvic floor physiotherapist.

I have a BSC. Kinesiology and have been helping people reduce and eradicate pain for 25 years. I have also been a bridge between the medical world and yoga. Two of my programs have been studied at the University of Calgary and both showed benefit for supporting people and their wellbeing. I am also the best selling author of 10 books and yoga video series, including Anatomy and Asana: Preventing Yoga Injuries.
I have been training teachers and health professionals in yoga therapy since 2001 and am the director and lead teacher of the highly successful C-IAYT Accredited Functional Synergy Yoga Therapy Program.
You can count on my expertise and experience. In addition to my IAYT program, I have appeared as a guest expert at Trent University, on Global TV, CTV, and in the Globe and Mail, Thrive Online, Chatelaine, Bride Magazine, Parenting, and Yoga Journal.
As a young student of yoga, I began to combine the ancient practices of yoga with my BSc. Kinesiology at a Vancouver pain clinic. When I continued to encounter individuals, including yoga instructors, who accepted that their pain was “normal”, I began to explore how yoga was being taught and practiced. By designing therapy programs that utilized sound anatomical principles of kinesiology with the time-honoured practices of gentle yoga, I have enabled people to find pain relief, feel good, and rediscover vitality in their lives.
"Susi is an exceptional coach. If you want to work with one of the best, if you want to work with someone who really wants you to succeed, if you want to work with someone who truly walks the walk and talks the talk, work with Susi. She really knows what she is doing".
"I chose to work with Susi because she is approachable, direct and clear in her teaching. As a teacher she is supportive while still pushing me in the direction I want to go in. She also practices what she preaches - which comes through in her teaching.
"I chose Susi's program because of her biomechanical approach to yoga therapy. I knew she would call it like she sees it and call me out if I needed it. She is clear that she wants her students to make a business out of it, not a part time gig, but full on making good money doing what they love."
