SO MANY PEOPLE THINK THEY NEED TO LIVE WITH NECK PAIN



And it makes sense.

Whether the tension sits:

  • behind the ear or jaw

  • at the base of the occiput

    in scalenes or sternocleidomastoid

  • at that unrelenting tight spot in trapezius or levator scapula.

And, whether the tension travels up to the head, around the skull, or in between the shoulder blades.

It can appear that nothing works - no matter what you do.

IT IS TIME TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT



You have self-massaged your neck, and you have strengthened your core. You've worked with the isolation exercises - like pulling the chin back or specific neck stretches.

You've read or watched videos about the relationship between the neck and pelvis, the neck and your shoulder girdle. You've tried to release the tissue or "open" through your chest.

You've tried professional treatment (chiropractic, physical therapy, pilates, massage, acupuncture, yoga, and other forms of body work or exercise).

And you do feel better ... in some ways. While there is some relief, the symptoms settle right back to where they began.

A key point to recognize is the neck is an incredible compensator.

It will brace, grip, and hold tension in order to provide support when other body parts aren't functioning well.

But the support is inadequate, ineffective, and shields you from what the actual issue is.

Over time, these compensation patterns become habitual patterns making it more and more difficult to find a resolution.

This is why you can end up chasing symptoms, getting superficial relief but not sustainable gains.

It is also why despite the professional adjustments and specialized exercise programs your pain and tension continue.

You aren't solving the problem that actually exists.

THIS IS WHERE I CAN HELP

I have almost 3 decades of working with people resolve persistent patterns of pain (my more detailed bio is closer to the bottom of this page). The key characteristic amongst all of them was a pattern of tension that they either had no clue existed, or didn't know how to resolve.

When they were able to recognize and address this pattern of tension, they had longer lasting success.

  1. Grow Your Awareness - You can't change anything you aren't aware of, which is a key reason for why pain remains persistent and is not resolved.  Applying this concept will help you to become more deliberate and accurate with how you work with your neck. Experience relaxation. Down-regulate your nervous system and recoup your energy.

2. Understand Anatomy and Movement Principles - When you can apply anatomy to movement and movement to pain reduction, you'll see more clearly what the real problem is. This will improve your ability to apply exercise and other therapeutic techniques to your unique situation.

3. Biomechanics, Recovery, and Healing - Susi coined the term "Biomechanics of Healing" very deliberately. Our nervous systems are very plastic. Our tissue can change. When we combine the way our brains work with the ambition and drive our minds and the mechanics of our body, real healing can arise.

4. Why People Don't Heal and How They Can - There are contributing factors for why people's progress can be slow, or stall completely. Understanding these ideas will reinvigorate your connection with yourself and your process of recovery.

I am Susi Hately.

I have a B.Sc. Kinesiology and have been helping people reduce and eradicate pain for almost 30 years.

I blend science-based biomechanics and anatomy with the ancient wisdom of yoga to help my clients gain awareness and clarity on what the real problem is.

This combination has enabled me to be a bridge between the medical world and yoga.

Two of my yoga programs have been studied at the University of Calgary and both showed benefit for supporting people and their wellbeing.

I have worked with the Olympic Luge and Speed Skating teams, elite-level basketball players, Ironman triathletes, skiers, and runners. My clients are active or have been active, and their pain has made their life too constricted – which is why they sought me out.

  • Practices to Recognize Your Compensation Patterns. And what you can do about them.

  • How to retrain your full body so your neck doesn't have to brace, grip, or compensate. This is when you will start to feel so much better.

  • How To Choose The Best Exercises For Yourself. To help you ease pain, and feel lighter, freer and have your head be more clear.
